How to Make Your House Cozier in Winter

How to Make Your House Cozier in Winter

There's no better feeling on a cold winter night than settling in with your family or loved ones to chat about your day, enjoy dinner, or maybe watch a movie. Many of the best Ridgewood homes for sale are already quite cozy, but you can always make small improvements here and there.

In fact, our agents thought it'd be fun to share a few tips on how to make your house cozier during the winter season:

Blankets, Blankets, Blankets

If there's one thing you can never have enough of during winter, it's blankets. One great thing about blankets is that they come in every color or style imaginable, so you can match them with any decor or throw caution to the wind with crazy designs. They also allow you to cuddle up with your spouse or a loved one to watch a holiday movie together.

Avoid the Freezing Floor

Many of today's modern homes have done away with carpet and replaced their flooring with either wood or tile. These surfaces look absolutely fantastic, but once the weather turns cold, stepping on one in your bare feet can give you quite the shock. The most obvious way to combat this is by wearing thick socks all the time. It's also not a bad idea to cover up high-traffic areas with a rug.

Sit in Front of the Fireplace

Nothing says cozy in quite the same way as sitting in front of a fireplace on a cold winter night. To be honest, you don't even have to sit right in front of it. Start a fire and stay across the room under a soft blanket, and you'll be warmed up in no time. You can basically do the same thing with a wood stove, even if that's not quite as picturesque as a roaring fireplace.

Use Light to Create Ambiance

It's amazing how just a few lights can improve a room's ambiance. Adding just a single table or floor lamp can completely transform the look and feel of a room. A dimmer switch on overhead lights and ceiling fixtures will do even better. But, if you really want a room to feel cozy, we suggest you set up several flameless candles.

Sprinkle in Mother Nature

Once the winter season arrives, you can find plenty of wreaths and garlands available at your local department store or specialty store. Bringing some of these items inside your home will give your atmosphere more of an outdoor feel and make it just a wee bit cozier. Some winter season favorites include holly clippings, spruce clippings, pine cones, eucalyptus, berries, and candles.

Add Curtains

We definitely won't pretend that blinds don't look great because they absolutely do. That being said, if you're going for a cozy feel, you may want to add some curtains. You can get curtains in every color or design imaginable. They're also relatively easy to take down and put up, so you could have curtains for different times of the year.
