Prepping Your Home for a New Puppy

Prepping Your Home for a New Puppy

Getting a new puppy is an exciting time for the whole family. It's important to start teaching your children what they'll need to be doing once the puppy arrives. Keeping small items off the floor and putting away their shoes is just the start. Having a puppy is a big responsibility, and everyone has a role to play.

Invest in a Good Crate

Investing in a good crate will serve several purposes. It will provide your puppy with a safe space and also keep them from getting into trouble while you are at work. Puppy crates make great training tools and will give your puppy a place where they can go to rest without interference.

Buy a Baby Gate or Two

Buying a baby gate will help to keep your new puppy away from areas where they may get into trouble. Gates can also be used near stairs to ensure they don't fall. Your agent can find several Ridgewood homes for sale that would be ideal for your growing family.

Designate a Puppy Safe Area

Designate a puppy safe area. In most cases, this will be a kitchen or porch area that has tile or linoleum that is easy to clean. A safe space will be free of any chemicals or objects that must be kept out of your puppy's reach.

Lock Up Chemicals, Medications, and Other Toxic Items

Just like with a small child, chemicals and medications can be quite harmful to your pets. While you can keep your medications in a medicine cabinet, you may want to find a safer place to store your cleaning chemicals. Place them in a locked cabinet or put them on a shelf in your garage or laundry room.

Put Houseplants Out of Reach

Many houseplants are toxic to your pets. Put them on a higher shelf or keep them in a room where your puppy isn't allowed to go. Make sure to pick up any leaves that may drop as well.

Dog-Proof Your Trash Can

One of the biggest problems puppy owners face is keeping them out of the trash can! Keep it secure by putting a weight in the bottom or placing it in the pantry so you can keep it behind a closed door.
